But How Do I Practice Articulation with my Child?
After printing your child's target sounds from the worksheets above try these.
Here are 10 ideas to practice your child's articulation skills with them.....
* Put your articulation cards under your pillow. Say them when you go to bed and when you get up.
* Hide the cards around the house and name them as you find them.
*Name your cards as you shine a flashlight beam on them.
*Put your cards on a cookie tray. Flip them with a spatula while you name them.
* Say your words or sentences into a voice recorder and play them back.
*Bounce a ball on your cards one at a time, saying them or a sentence with them each time you bounce.
*Put a skittle, m&m, or cereal piece on top of each card. Name them as you eat each one.
*Hide a penny under one of your cards. Name cards and keep the penny when you find it.
*Roll a toy car over your pictures as you name them.

READ! READ! READ! One of the best ways to practice your target sound in connected speech is to read aloud! Your child is probably reading a book as part of their nightly homework. Incorporate their speech practice into this time and give them a verbal cue to "Use your best sounds" and ask them what sounds they are working on in speech....that puts the monitoring back on them! If you hear them error their target sound, just give a simple "oops" and model the correct production for them. If your child is in the upper grades, ask them "Tell me about the book your reading, use your best speech while you do".....and then ask open ended questions so you don't get one word responses. Try this question "What is the main problem in your book and how do you think the characters wil solve it?" Always followed with the verbal cue of "Use your best speech sounds!" Praise their good speech!!!!
Need some short reading and conversation practice for your sound?
Here is an animal habitat website game that can build vocabulary while your child practices their sound in reading and conversation. Have your child read the short passage to you that follows their answer and then tell you how that animal is or isn't adapted to live in that environment. I always love to build some curriculum into our articulation practice! Reading aloud from their textbooks or homework is a perfect way to practice articulation, too! Just give them that reminder, "I'm listening for your best sounds, too!"
